Wall Decor DIY is such a broad category. It seems there are no rules anymore. You just hang what you like.
But I’ve been asked to help many friends who’ve been stuck. They were afraid they would hang something wrong so their things sat in a closet or worse – sat on the floor.
I say follow your instincts. But here are a few pointers that I like.
1. Mirrors are timeless and can visually expand any space. But be mindful of what is being reflected. For example, do you really want a reflection of the ceiling fan in your mirror? Try instead to place your mirrors so they are reflecting light, the outdoors or something interesting.
2. Just because a room is small, doesn’t mean you have to find small art. Large art in a small space is a game changer!
3. Don’t hang your art too high. The center of your artwork (or grouping) should roughly be at average eye level.
4. Use good Ook picture hangers. They are designed for easy installation into drywall. And they help minimize wall damage while offering strong support.
In terms of making your own DIY Wall Decor, I’m hoping you find some inspo here. However, if these ideas don’t work for you at least consider the following:
If you’re making abstract art, start with a used canvas and just use white primer to cover everything. That not only saves you money but keeps something out of the landfill.
Be sure to sign your own artwork. You could be famous one day :)
If you’re hanging a group of your favorite things, try laying them out on the floor first. Once you’re happy with the look and feel, snap a photo so you can duplicate the look on your wall.
