This post is about Kitchen DIY Decor. Not the big stuff like updating your cabinet doors or what to do with that big empty space above your cabinets. Think smaller, like how to make your outdated slow cooker fit in at a fiesta-themed party.
Before we get into it, I first have to show off these cute little donkey cookies. My friend made these for this baby shower I was hosting. The theme was fiesta with Tiffany blue as an accent color. Aren’t they too cute!
Every party has those things you need but they can mess up your decor energy. I’m talking about things like slow cookers, tortilla warmers, serving bottles, condiment jars and trash cans.
The list could be so very long. I know I am not the only one that frets over such details. You hostesses KNOW what I’m talking about. This is where creativity and kitchen DIY decor comes in handy.
This post is meant to give you a few ideas (just in case you haven’t already thought of these) 😊
Kitchen DIY Decor | Slow Cooker Doesn’t Match? Cover it!
In the case of this baby shower, the theme was Fiesta. I found paper products that included a Tiffany blue color. Then I picked up some coordinating wrapping paper with that same Tiffany blue.
I knew I would need to do some kitchen DIY decor to make everything come together. Because, regardless of what color the theme was, the likelihood of it matching my old slow cooker was very slim. So I knew I would be making a temporary paper cover with the wrapping paper.
This idea will be a bit harder if the shape of your slow cooker flares at all. But it is still possible to achieve if you make a paper template.
I always keep a stack of 8.5″ x 11″ scratch paper from my printer. For this template, I had to tape a few sheets together.
When making a paper template, if there are protrusions (like knobs, cords or handles) I make rough cuts to allow for those areas. And then when the template roughly fits the object. I can go back and finesse the cut outs.
Once I was happy with my scrap-paper template, I traced around the template onto the wrapping paper. Of course, I cut it out as neatly as possible. Then I attached the wrapping paper with regular clear tape on the backside of the slow cooker.
Easy peasy, and makes such a difference. Once the party was over, I simply discarded the paper cover because it had a couple small stains. But I saved the paper template for the next time I need cover my slow cooker.
Kitchen DIY Decor | Cover the Tortilla Warmer
Our tortilla warmer gets frequent use, and not just for parties. So, of course why not use some kitchen DIY decor and make it match my style? (For me, animal print is a neutral.)
The original tortilla warmer was not fancy. It’s the typical white Styrofoam type. And because of its shape, I therefore had to make another paper template.
I traced the paper template onto my fabric and cut it out as neatly as possible. Undeniably, this type of fabric will fray around the edges. So in this case, leather would have been a better choice (since it does not fray). However, the leather I had was too stiff to mold around the contours of the lid. So I opted for the zebra-fabric instead.
To attach the fabric to the warmer, I turned the warmer upside down without the lid. I covered the bottom with a piece of paper so as to protect it from overspray. Then I sprayed the sides with spray adhesive and attached the animal print fabric.
Now it was time to deal with the challenging contours of the lid. (To clarify, I was not able to make a paper template due to the contours.) So I covered the lid with 2 separate pieces of fabric. One small piece that I cut into a circle. This was to cover the centerpiece.
And a second piece of fabric that was a couple inches bigger than the lid. I cut a hole in the center of the second piece. That hole was exactly the same size as the centerpiece.
Next, I sprayed the top of the lid with spray adhesive and attached the small centerpiece first. Then I placed the second piece of fabric (the one with the hole in the center). And trimmed off the excess fabric from the lid.
To prevent the fabric from fraying, I glued gold plastic trim around all the cut edges. But I love how the trim looks like brushed gold, so I don’t mind it at all.
This gold trim is no longer available from Hobby Lobby. But I found a similar trim on Amazon, it’s actually metal! But it is a hot fix. If you were to use it, you’ll want to attach it with hot glue for fear that a hot iron would damage the Styrofoam ☹
Lastly, the little thing on the lid was just some random piece I had in my pile. I attached that with hot glue.
TIP: I cook raw tortillas on the griddle. That makes the tortillas very hot. So, I have lined the inside of my tortilla warmer with foil to keep from damaging the Styrofoam.
Kitchen DIY Decor | Cover the Powdered Sugar Sifter Too
We like to host brunch get togethers. No brunch is complete for us, without serving French Toast. And no French Toast is complete without a light dusting of powdered sugar. This was super easy. I didn’t even have to make a paper template. It’s just a small piece of cardstock with clear tape in the back of course.
Kitchen DIY Decor | Repackage the Syrup, Dressings, and Sauces
This one is the easiest kitchen DIY decor! Instead of putting Mrs. Butterworth’s shapely bottle out on the table in front of your guests, just transfer the contents to one of these cool bottles. You can store it in this bottle for future use and refill as needed. These bottles are also great for “repackaging” dressings and sauces.
Kitchen DIY Decor | Cover the Trash Cans
For big parties I have white cardboard trash boxes. I will sometimes cover them with coordinating wrapping paper or leave them white. (Sorry, I don’t have a photo of one covered.) As a consolation, I’m providing you with a photo of this cute little can that I recovered for our game room get togethers.
It’s your typical stainless steel small can. But stainless steel doesn’t coordinate well with my room. So I covered it.
Here I used faux stingray (aka Shagreen) because I had some left over from when I made our shuffleboard cover. The color I used here is Quartz. I used strong spray adhesive because I want this to be permanent.
Materials Used
Wrapping paper
Fabric
Pyramid stud metal nail head trim (3/8”)
Card stock
Classic swing top glass bottles (16oz)
Disposable cardboard trash receptacles
Faux stingray leather (Shagreen)
